Air Fares Charged by YOUR weight

Samoa Air have just become the friend of the underweight people….

Samoa Air, Introducing a world first:

‘Pay only for what you weigh’!

We at Samoa Air are keeping airfares fair, by charging our passengers only for what they weigh. You are the master of your Air’fair’, you decide how much (or little) your ticket will cost. No more exorbitant excess baggage fees, or being charged for baggage you may not carry. Your weight plus your baggage items, is what you pay for. Simple.

The Sky’s the Limit!

I became curious at how this would work, so I read their website:

So how does ‘Pay-by-weight’ work?
Well, its simple really:
Step 1. Select ‘Make a Booking’, and choose your flight
Step 2. Enter your details, including your estimated weight(s) of passengers and baggage
Step 3. Your airfare is then calculated using your weight.
Step 4. You travel happy, knowing full well that you are only paying for exactly what you weigh… nothing more.

At 80kg the sample flight was $169.60, but then I realised I needed to use my weight + all bags, so:

125kg (80kg for me, 20kg for suitcase and 5kg for cabin bag) = $265
My girlfriend would be $106 with no bags, or $159 with the bags, over $100 cheaper for her.  Maybe I need to lose weight 🙂
A child/baby weighing 5 kg is $10.60

It all seem very fair, unless you like to bring very heavy cabin bags to get around the baggage excess fees that most people pay. Some people have bags so heavy they can’t lift them into the overhead lockers, they wouldn’t be happy by this.

Airlines fuel bills are based on how much weight they have to carry; more weight = more fuel, so; more weight = more charge for the ticket.  But I like the equality, with those who are lighter, and with less baggage, paying even less 🙂
