Under the current Royal rules, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s children will have the royal title of Prince or Princess, when their Grandfather becomes King.
This rule was set by King George V in 1917, when he stated that great-grandchildren of the monarch would not get to be princes or princesses, apart from the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales.
That ruling permitted for Prince William’s eldest son, George, to be titled a prince, being the "eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales".
In 2012, Queen Elizabeth II, extended that ruling to all children of the Prince of Wales’ eldest son, as direct line heirs to the throne.
This meant that Charlotte and Louis, are also entitled to the princess and prince titles.
In March 2021, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, suggested her son Archie was denied his birthright of the title of prince by the Royal Family and that the decision went against protocol.
She spoke of her shock at being told he would not get police protection because he did not have a title, and suggested that the decision was taken because of his mixed race.
Under protocols established by George V in letters patent more than 100 years ago in 1917, the children and grandchildren of a sovereign have the automatic right to the title HRH and prince or princess.
At the time Archie was born, he was the great-grandchild of a sovereign, not a grandchild. The protocol was therefore that Archie was not a prince.
Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the new monarch is King Charles III. Archie is now a grandchild of the sovereign.
On the 8th September 2022, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor is now a prince, and Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor is a princess.
Nothing to do with race, just the 1917 protocol being followed..
