Australians often claim that Australia is both the world's largest island and the world's smallest continent.

The term "continent" translates from the Greek ἤπειρος, or "landmass".
Australia is generally regarded as continental landmass, and has an area approximating 768 million hectares.

By scientific criteria:
A continent is a very large landmass.

Europe, Africa and Asia are one Continent.
North and South Americas are one Continent.
Madagascar and several other islands are continents.

Greenland is geologically part of the North American continent.
Australia is geologically part of the Australasian continent.

Technically every continent in the world could be considered an island.

Greenland is 2,130,800 sq km or 213,080,000 hectares
Australia is 7,686,850 sq km or 768,685,000 hectares (2,967,909 sq miles)
