Is Crimea in Ukraine or Russia?

Crimea, Ukrainian or Russian Territory.

In 2014 Russia covertly invaded and illegally annexed Crimea, a move that was denounced by the international community.

Russia has stated that Crimea is now Russian territory.

Claims like this, based on military takeover, were common a few hundred years ago based on their military takeover of countries.

One example of this was in 1783, when Catherine II (the Great) annexed the Crimean peninsula from the Ottoman Empire.

The Crimean War, 1853–56, saw Russia removed from Crimea, and were forbidden to base their warships in the Black Sea.

In 1917 the Crimean Tatars declared Crimea to be an independent democratic republic.
