There have now been THREE Israel-Arab peace agreements.
They have come with the involvement of three United States presidents: Jimmy Carter in 1979, Bill Clinton in 1994 and Donald Trump in 2020.
The UAE is the third Arab country, after Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994, to formally normalize its relationship with Israel. The signing ceremony is yet to take place.
2020 Israel–UAE peace agreement
The Israel–United Arab Emirates peace agreement, or the Abraham Accord, was agreed to by Israel and the United Arab Emirates on August 13, 2020. After negotiators had reached the agreement, United States president Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and UAE Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed held a conference call immediately prior to the formal announcement.
1994 Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty
The Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty was signed on October 26, 1994, by Jordan’s King Hussein and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and witnessed by United States President Bill Clinton. The signing ceremony took place at Arabah on the border between Israel and Jordan.
1979 Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty
The Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty was signed on 26 March 1979, by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, and witnessed by United States president Jimmy Carter. The signing ceremony took place in Washington, United States.
Reactions to Israel-Arab agreements
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas denounced the accord with this statement: “The Palestinian leadership rejects and denounces the UAE, Israeli and US trilateral, surprising announcement.” and labelled the deal “an aggression on the Palestinian people” and “a betrayal of Jerusalem, Al-Aqsa and the Palestinian cause.”
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, welcomed the agreement, with this comment: “I followed with interest and appreciation the joint statement between the United States, United Arab Emirates and Israel to halt the Israeli annexation of Palestinian lands and taking steps to bring peace in the Middle East,”
The Bahrain News Agency said that the Gulf state of Bahrain welcomed the accord between the UAE and Israel.
The Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the UAE-Israel deal was a “betrayal of the Palestinian cause”.
A foreign ministry spokesman in Oman expressed the sultanate’s “support for the UAE’s decision regarding relations with Israel”.
