Lidl and ALDI confirmed as the cheapest supermarkets in the UK

UK Supermarket price comparison.

A UK supermarket price comparison, that looked at the cost of 78 essentials across branded and non-branded lines, found that Lidl and ALDI had the lowest cost.

  1. Lidl: £70.02
  2. Aldi: £72.23
  3. Asda: £80.15
  4. Tesco: £88.28
  5. Morrisons: £90.27
  6. Sainsbury’s: £93.93
  7. Ocado: £109.61
  8. Waitrose: £111.77

The price comparison was carried out by Which? and looked at Aldi, Lidl, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Ocado.

Which?, has been analysing supermarket prices for years, but have only added Aldi and Lidl in 2020.

Which? used to only include branded products in their trolley, for identical comparisons.

The downside was that, as Aldi and Lidl primarily sell own-label items with just a small supplementary range of branded goods, they couldn’t be included.

Many Which? members had asked to include Aldi and Lidl in future surveys, and this has now been done, with own-label items now being added to the trolley of goods.
