NATO and Ukraine 2023-2025

NATO involvement with Ukraine.

NATO is a military alliance of 32 nations, primarily formed in 1949 to protect Europe from possible invasion from the Soviet Union.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, NATO’s direct assistance to Ukraine had been non-lethal, providing things like uniforms, tents, medical supplies and logistics support.

Some NATO member countries however, have been individually supplying weapons to Ukraine since the Russian invasion. These weapons were primarily only for defensive purposes, to be used only in Ukraine territory against the invaders.

This was because no country wants any direct attacks on Russian territory, even from Ukraine.

In August 2025, following after Russian threats, and increasing attacks on Ukrainian civilians, NATO is now coordinating regular and large-scale arms deliveries, from various countries especially the United States, to be sent to Ukraine.

The restriction on where these weapons can be used appears to have now been substantially removed.

The United Nations has said that Russia’s relentless pounding of urban areas behind the front line has now killed more than 12,000 Ukrainian civilians.

Very few Russian civilians have been killed by Ukrainian attacks on Russian military installations.
