What are the differences between Parentheses ( ), Brackets [ ] and Braces { }
Parentheses ( )
Parentheses are mainly used to separate out information thatĀ isn’tĀ essential to the meaning of the rest of the sentence. So even without the wording in the parentheses, the sentence would still make sense.
For example:
London (in the UK) is a very popular tourist destination.
ABCDiamond is well known in British Expat cirles (see www.abcdiamond.com/about).
Brackets [ ]
Brackets (square brackets) are used to enclose extra words added to clarify the meaning of the wording.
For example:
www.britzinoz.com [a website owned by ABCDiamond] has been used to provide information to the British Expat community in Australia since 2005.
Braces { }
Braces are a pair of characters, { }, used as a third sign of aggregation in complex mathematical or logical expressions that already contain parentheses and square brackets, usually as the outermost delimiter in a complex expression.
For example:
{a+b[c+d(e+f)]}
