Prince Philip, a great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria


Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, is one of Queen Victoria’s  great-great-grandchildren..

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert have 142 great-great-grandchildren, and one of those is the husband of  Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh.

Many people have wondered about Prince Philips royal line, and his link to the throne of Greece, but are not aware of his link to the throne of the United Kingdom.

Many would not be aware that he is in the line of succession to the throne, although way down the line at around 500th. (and getting further away all the time).

Prince Philip has TWO links to British Royalty.

  • Prince Philip married into the Windsor Family in 1947, when he married Elizabeth.
  • Prince Philip was also born into the Royal family, in 1921. Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth are third cousins through Queen Victoria.

  • Princess Alice of Battenberg, is a daughter of Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine
  • Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine, is a daughter of Princess Alice of the United Kingdom Eldest daughter of Princess Alice of the United Kingdom and Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine).
  • Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, is a daughter of Queen Victoria. (Third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert) .

Prince Philip, Husband to Elizabeth II since 1947, Consort of the British monarch from 6 February 1952, was born in Corfu, Greece on 10 June 1921.

He is the father of:

  • Charles, Prince of Wales
  • Anne, Princess Royal
  • Prince Andrew, Duke of York
  • Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex

Prince Philip’s uncle was King Constantine I of Greece until 22 September 1922, when he was forced to abdicate.

Philip’s father, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, was banished from Greece with his family, and were evacuated on a British Naval Cruiser, HMS Calypso.

In 1928, Philip went to school in the United Kingdom, living at both Kensington Palace and Lynden Manor.

Prince Philip joined the Royal Navy in 1939 and served during the Second World War.
