Health Insurance in the UK.
According to a 2018 UK report, health insurance can cost an average of £1,435 per year, but this can vary based on your age and health.
The main advantage of private cover is that you can get quicker access to medical treatment if you need it, whether it is a physio session or diagnostic treatment.
Why do people get health insurance?
- Faster access to treatment.
- Clinic or consultant choice.
- Private rooms.
- Other perks and benefits, better food being one example.
In 2021, the numbers of people in the UK with the various forms of medical insurance was shown to be:
- 1,601,640 people with ‘Full in patient and full out patient cover’. (Down from 2,738,590 in 2019).
- 1,059,100 people with ‘Full in patient and limited out patient cover’. (Down from 1,363,710 in 2019).
- 795,780 had cover for minor treatments (optician, dental, physio etc). (Down from 929,060 in 2019).
- 361,120 had cover for consultant and diagnosis costs. (Down from 362,750 in 2019).
- 331,460 had cover for Cash payments if treated in NHS hospital. (Up from 273,830 in 2019).
- 886,450 had other types of cover. (Up from 867,550 in 2019).
That is about 5.4 million in 2021, down from about 6.5 million in 2019.
From a population of 69 million, that is 7.8% with some form of cover on 2021, down from 9.4% in 2019.
