Rummikub – The Numbers Game

It’s hard to find family games that are fun and challenging for both kids and adults, but Rummikub fills the bill on all counts. The rules are simple, the game is varied, and the fun is free for everyone!

The Original Rummikub is the classic, all-family rummy game! Similar to the Rummy that you play with cards, you try to get rid of all your tiles by forming numbers into runs (such as Red 7, Red 8 and Red 9) and sets (Black 8, Red 8 and Blue 8) and keep adding onto them. The colours of the numbers on the tiles are like card suits. This game may start rather uneventfully, but when the players start putting more and more tiles in play, the options for your upcoming turns can become more complex, challenging, and exciting. Don’t get caught with the joker on your rack if someone else shouts out “Rummikub! A great combination of strategy and luck makes Rummikub the perfect game for all ages!

The more you build, the closer you will get to winning! The game changes with every move, up until the very end. And with wild-card joker tiles adding a bit of luck to the strategy needed to win. Playing the game

Lay all tiles face down on a table.

To decide who begins the game, each player picks a tile and the person with the highest numbered tile begins.
Each player takes 14 tiles and the remaining tiles become the ‘pool’.
The players can sort their tiles on their rack by colour or number, into sets of “groups” (colour) or “runs” (numbers).
A “group” is a set of three or four tiles of the same number, but each in a different colour.
A “run” is a set of three or more consecutive numbers which are of the same colour.

Initial Play

Players make sets and lay them on the table – this is called a ‘meld’.

Each players “first set” must add up to at least 30 points (by adding up the tile values) – this is called the “initial meld”.

If unable to make an initial meld, or a player chooses to delay, they must pick up an additional tile from the pool. This concludes the players turn.

Each player must lay down an initial meld, one cannot manipulate (add or take tiles away from an existing set) a set before laying down an initial meld.

Manipulation

Manipulating is the most exciting part of the Rummikub game as players try to lay down as many tiles as possible by rearranging or adding to existing sets, both their own sets and sets created by other players.
After manipulations are completed all sets must be complete sets, without any spare loose tiles left on the table.

The Winner

The winner is the first person who empties their rack of tiles.  To determine the 2nd, 3rd place etc., each player adds up their tile values [with the joker valued at 30] and the person with the lowest number comes 2nd.

The Joker

All rules apply to both jokers regardless of colour (Red & black)
Either joker can be used to complete any group or run.
Two jokers CAN be used in a single set
A joker cannot be retrieved before a player has laid down their initial meld.
A joker can be retrieved from a set on the table by any player who can replace it with another tile of the same numerical and colour value it represents.
The tile used to replace the joker can be taken from the table or from the player’s rack. In the case of a group of three – the joker can represent either of the missing colors (there are four colours in the game).
Once a player replaces a joker, they must use it in the same turn as part of a set. Sets containing jokers can be split and manipulated like regular sets.
Even if a particular tile is already on the meld area twice (there are 2 tiles of the same number and colour in each game. Eg. X2 tiles that are 3-red) a player may still use a joker to represent that tile a third time.
If a joker remains on a player’s rack at the end of the game, its penalty value is 30 points.
