Russia and the International Criminal Court.

The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Putin, for offences in Ukraine.

Russia withdrew from the International Criminal Court (ICC) in 2016, after the ICC ruled that Russia’s invasion of Crimea amounted to an “ongoing occupation”.
Russia withdrew as it did not want to be held accountable for its illegal actions.

Ukraine has granted the International Criminal Court (ICC) jurisdiction over its territory and the ICC prosecutor Karim Khan has visited four times since opening an investigation a year ago.

Ukraine is not a member of the ICC, but it accepted the court’s jurisdiction over alleged crimes committed on its territory since November 2013, and in doing so, the obligation to cooperate with the court. www.hrw.org

The ICC had issued an arrest warrant for Putin, and some countries have confirmed that they would arrest Putin should he set foot in their countries.

It is therefore likely that Putin will not attend many international events in his Presidential or Private status, in the future.
