The meaning of “A La Mode”


The french phrase “A La Mode” simply means “in Fashion”  [1640s,  lit. “in the fashion”.]

Other strange translations and uses of the Phrase:

The American language has translated this to mean “with Ice Cream”, as having ice cream with pie was fashionable when they began to use the phrase

Others however found it fashionable to have vegetables with beef, and therefore  “A La Mode” began to mean “with vegetables”.

Be wary when ordering food: ‘A La Mode’ in the USA  😉
