The Origin of the American Language version of English

When Noah Webster (1758 – 1843) was a teacher, he felt that they were using poor and unsatisfactory textbooks that came from England. He thought that Americans should learn from American books, and began to change spellings of some English words to an American way.

In 1786 he produced the American Spelling Book.

The American-English language, or US-English, is an adaptation of the English language, obviously the language of England, as used by many new arrivals in America.

Noah Webster is credited with the changes when he produced the American Spelling Book in 1786.

In 1786 Noah Webster produced the American Spelling Book. However, the name “American” language did not stick, and the US used the wording American-English or US-English to differentiate from English, as used by the English people.

The American Merriam-Webster dictionaries trace their lineage to that of Noah Webster.
