The average U.S. household with revolving credit card debt carried a balance of $6,081 as of June 2017, although about 18% of these would usually paid their credit card balance in full each month.

43.9% of U.S. households had some credit card debt in December 2016.

The average American household consisted of 2.54 people in 2017

This is according to NerdWallet (December 2017)

However, another report shows that the median debt per American household is only $2,300, while the average debt stands at $5,700. This is from valuepenguin.com on their July 2018 Credit Card Debt in America report.

  • Median means: Half of the people had values below and half had values above.

This report also showed that the amounty of credit card debt varied a lot based on income.

  • Households with an income of under $25,000 had an average debt of $3,000 (12% of income)
  • Households with an income over $160,000 had an average debt of $11,200 (7% of income)

Example of Perceived Credit Card Debt versus No Debt:

A person has credit card debt of $3,000, but has $5,000 in the bank. That person is listed as a person with debt, even though their net balance is no debt.
