The Soviet Union (USSR) formally ceased to exist 32 years ago, on 31 December 1991.
The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), then became 15 independent countries:
- Armenia
- Azerbaijan
- Belarus
- Estonia
- Georgia
- Kazakhstan
- Kyrgyzstan
- Latvia
- Lithuania
- Moldova
- Russia
- Tajikistan
- Turkmenistan
- Ukraine
- Uzbekistan
Russia, which controlled the USSR to a great degree, has lost control of many of these countries, although appears to be trying to stop the remaining ones from leaving it’s sphere of influence.
